First lines: Dusty in Memphis

Warren Zanes’s Dusty in Memphis is not a book about a record. It’s a part of Continuum’s 33⅓ series, which I believe to be a series of essays on albums and what they mean to the writer. So, in a way, and despite it’s first line, it is a book about a record: it’s a book about why Zanes fell in love with Dusty in Memphis and how it relates to another love of his, the Mythical (American) South.

Such displays of personal obsession could make a very tedious book, but luckily Zanes knows how to tell an entertaining story. As for Dusty in Memphis? Well, you gotta hear that for yourself anyway.
