Not Traditional

Donald L. Carcieri is the Republican governor of Rhode Island, and he just vetoed a bill which would allow “domestic partners” * to legally arrange the funeral of their deceased partner. In his veto message, he said that this bill represents a disturbing trend over the past few years of the incremental erosion of the principles surrounding traditional marriage, which is not the preferred way to approach this issue.

I must admit that I’m a bit baffled by this. So maybe it’s not traditional that people of the same sex are living together or that they would like to enjoy the same rights ‘straight’ couples have. So fucking what? It’s an inescapable fact that these thing happen all the time, whether governor Carcieri likes it or not. And I would argue that is nothing but traditional that people who love each other live together and that they arrange each others funeral. **

It’s 2009, for fuck’s sake. Pull your bigoted head out of your ass, and smell the fucking sunshine.

* i.e., people of the same gender who are not allowed to be married, because marriage is a god-given institution, it’s non-traditional and all that poppycock.
** Also, tradition has it that every time you see a rainbow, God is having gay sex.
