As the title implies, Daniël Lohues‘ Allennig cycle is a one-man project. He’s the only musician on the albums, and his shows are just him, a piano and some guitars on an almost empty stage.
It wasn’t until about a year and a half ago that I really got what Skik was all about. That was about four years into their open ended hiatus. Being fairly obsessive about things I like, I also explored lead singer / songwriter Daniël Lohues’ solo outings. His blues band phase is nice enough, but his solo work is right up my alley.
Last year I caught his show in Apeldoorn, and last Saturday, I found myself in a cozy theater in Amsterdam for set of new songs. He played fifteen to twenty songs, and it wasn’t until the very end of the show when he played something familiar. Which means I can’t say anything useful about most of the set. The piano-version of “Op fietse” was nice though. The new album should be out in a couple of weeks time.
