Today, my sister and I went for a bike ride to the Piramide van Austerlitz, near Amersfoort. It is gloriously pointless and it is probably the most ridiculous monument in The Netherlands. It doesn’t make any sense at all. It’s awesome.
The pyramid was build in 1804 by the French army under Auguste de Marmont, and it was later dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte and his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. Its base measures 48 by 48 meters, the sides make an angle of 45 degrees, which forms a platform 23 meters up. On the top is a stone obelisk. As the pyramid is entirely made from ground covered with grass, it had fallen into a state of disrepair. From 2004 on, the monument has been restored in is original glory.
I had a fun day today, and as a bonus, I get to cross something off on my 100 things list.
