First Lines: Heart-Shaped Box

Judas Coyne bought a ghost on the internet. It arrived in a heart-shaped box, attached to a dead man’s suit. If you think that that probably isn’t going to end well, you’d be right.

Last year, I loved Joe Hill’s Horns to bits. While I don’t think his first novel Heart-Shaped Box is as good, it’s still pretty damn good. You know those Stephen King novels where, despite some spooky stuff going on, deep down it’s really about the people in the story? Well, Heart-Shaped Box is a lot like that. Sure, the main antagonist is a ghost, but if he hadn’t been dead, the story would have worked just as well.
