Seen Live: Hanson

A guilty pleasure can be defined as something, such as a film, television programme, or piece of music, that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard. I despise the term. As if you ought to be ashamed of liking something others don’t appreciate the same way. Fuck that. If you like something no-one else does, good for you. If you don’t, so freakin’ what?

As such, I can publicly embrace the fact that I went to see Hanson. I believe there is nothing wrong with well-crafted pop songs, and they got a pile of ’em. Most people got stuck mentally with the mmmbopping boys they were in 1997, but on their latest album Anthem, released earlier this year, they got a load of big, hooky pop-songs with a pinch of Motown/R&B. As I had a pretty rad time when I saw them in 2011, going to the Tilburg stop of their world tour was a no-brainer.

There’s only two things I didn’t dig entirely this time around: the acoustic set slowing the show down for a bit too long, and the omission of my favorite song “If Only”. On the other hand, waving at my colleague Berry (I was there by choice, he because his girlfriend is in the fan club.) and their a cappella rendition of The Bee Gees’ “Too Much Heaven” more than made up for that.
